O PROTECT-IP é um projeto de lei que foi iniciado no Senado e na Casa e está movendo rapidamente pelo Congresso. Ele dá ao governo e às empresas o poder de censurar a rede, em nome de proteger a "criatividade". A lei deixaria o governo ou empresas censurar sites inteiros, eles apenas têm de convencer um juiz que o site é "dedicado à infração de direitos autorais".

O governo já desligou de forma errada sites sem qualquer recurso ao dono do site. Sob este projeto, compartilhar um vídeo com qualquer conteúdo de direitos autorais, ou que sites como YouTube e Twitter fazem, seria considerado comportamento ilegal de acordo com este projeto.

De acordo com o Escritório de Orçamento do Congresso, este projeto custaria a nós uma taxa de 47 bilhões de dólares por ano (aprox. 85 bilhões de reais) - isto por um conserto que não funcionará, que rompe a Internet, sufoca inovação, cala diversas vozes e censura a Internet. Este projeto é ruim para a criatividade e não protege seus direitos.

PROTECT-IP is a bill that has been introduced in the Senate and the House and is moving quickly through Congress. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting "creativity". The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites, they just have to convince a judge that the site is "dedicated to copyright infringement."

The government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year — that's for a fix that won't work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. This bill is bad for creativity and does not protect your rights.
