Lemon. This Volkswagen missed the boat. The chrome strip on the glove compartment is blemished and must be replaced. Chances are you wouldn't have noticed it; Inspector Kurt Kroner did. There are 3,389 men at our Wolfsburg factory with only one job: to inspect Volkswagens at each stage of production. (3000 Volkswagens are produced doily; there are more inspectors than cars.) Every shock absorber is tested (spot checking won't do), every windshield is scanned. VWs have been rejected for surface scratches barely visible to the eye. Final inspection is really something! VW inspectors run each car off the line onto the Funktionspriifstond can test stand), tote up 189 check points, gun ahead to the automatic brake stand, and say 'no' to one VW out of fifty. This preoccupation with detail means the VW lasts longer and requires less maintenance, by and large, than other cars. (It also means a used VW depreciates less than any other car.) We pluck the lemons; you get the plums.

MAZDA 626 SPORT COUPE UNUSUAL PERFORMANCE, LUXURY, AND VALUE IN ONE GREAT ROAD CAR.
The word got out fast. Motor Trend magazine named the all-new front-wheel-drive Mazda 626 its 1983 Import Car of the Year. Car and Driver said:'The Mazda 626 does everything well, and that makes it the standard of comparison in its class as far as we're concerned!' The public responded by making it one of the most popular road cars ever introduced in America. And why not? The innovative 626 gives you a lot to like. An
advanced 2-litre overhead cam engine that moves you from zero to 50 in 8 seconds flat. A years-ahead suspension system for exceptional handling. An interior spacious enough for five people. A 6-way adjustable driver's seat. A stunning list of standard features.

Electronic Variable Shock Absorbers are controlled by buttons on the dash linked to a solenoid valve atop each shock. NORMAL setting pro-vides a softer ride. In AUTO-MATIC mode, the front shocks stiffen above 50 mph for greater stability at cruising speed. SPORT, as the name implies, gives you firmer damping in all four shocks.

Saab introduces the WagonBack sedan. It's a sedan when you want it, and a wagon when you need it.

Saab introduces the WagonBack sedan. It's a sedan when you want it, and a wagon when you need it. Inside every Saab WagonBack Sedan, you'll find two cars. A sedan. And a Wagon. The sedan in our WagonBack is a comfortable, five-passenger luxury car, with the kind of head and leg room you expect to find in big cars. Very, very big cars. Yet it's as easy to park as a compact. It's a Saab sedan with a fuel-injected, 2 liter engine coupled with a 4-speed syncnromes, unsinisslon, to give you about twice the gas mileage of most full-size domestic cars'. (Of course, an automatic transmission is available.) And, like our other Saab sedans, our new WagonBack has features that make it strong, safe, and dependable. Features like front-wheel drive, rack and pinion steering, roll-cage construct tion, and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes. All standard. To find the wagon in our WagonBack, you just open the back, slide out the rear-window shelf, and fold down the rear seat. Now you've got a full 53 cubic feet of cargo space and more than 6 feet of flat floor length, level with the bumper for easy loading. So, when you're not carrying your family around in your sedan, you can carry lots of other things around in your wagon. The new Saab WagonBack Sedan. Two excellent cars. For the price of one. $5248. SAAB. It's what a car should be.

Chevrolet Impala. A sensible car for lots of things.

Chevrolet Impala. A sensible car for lots of things. Things like a bunch of bags and groceries. Fishing gear. Families of five or more. Traveling for a living. There are lots of car needs that can't be handled very well by anything but a family-size car. Impala has traditionally handled those needs so well, it's been America's number one car for 14 years in a row. Impala's leg, elbow, head and trunk room have made a lot of sense for a lot of people for a long time. IMPALA'S A SENSIBLE CAR IF YOU THINK ABOUT MONEY. These days, who doesn't? Impala is a reasonably priced car. Just how reasonably priced might surpriseyou. The difference between the prices of popular small cars and the price of an Impala may not be as great as you might think. Especially if you consider how much room, ride and comfort Impala's price buys you. That price also buys an impressive list of standard features. Power steering. Power brakes. Automatic transmission. Plus the comfortable feeling of being surrounded by a lot of car. And Impala traditionally has had a higher resale value than its nearest competition. That's why we call it the 'Great American Value.' Impala offers some very nice qualities for these times. Or any times. Think about it. Impala is a sensible car for lots of things. And lots of reasons.

1975. CHEVROLET THINKS IT'S TIME FOR A LITTLE GOOD NEWS. MONZA 2+2. A new small car that's a little more everything. The small car of tomorrow will probably be more responsive, handy and comfortable than ever. The 1975 Monza 2+2 is all this today. It has advances like rectangular headlights set in a soft front end. A beautifully thought-out 2+2 interior that switches from rear seats to a carpeted wagon floor anytime you say. And a new 4.3-litre V8 engine available that Shown above in foreground is gives the performance and econ-omy of a small V8 in a small car. You can wait for the small car of tomorrow to get here. But why? Monza arrived early and it's here today. NOVA. Ifs always been good. Now it's beautifuL Our Nova started out in 1962 with some simple, sensible goals: To be economical, yet comfortable and roomy. To be sensibly sized, practically priced and solid. Monza 2+2; in background is Nova LN Sedan. For 1975, Nova is still all that, and more. It's beautiful. Emphatically refined along the lines of elegant European sedans. And for 1975 there's a new Nova model we call the LN, with luxurious touches like thick carpeting, and wide-back reclining front seats. We feel a big year coming on.
