If you had to compete with GM, Ford and Chrysler what would you do?

IF YOU HAD TO COMPETE WITH GM, FORD AND CHRYSLER WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
You'd introduce the American Motors Matador. A car that even the dollar-conscious family man would find hard to resist.
You'd make the American Motors Javelin the hairiest looking sporty car in America, even at the risk of scaring some people off.
You'd design the American Motors Sportabout. A car that could do more for the American housewife than all the haircoloring, lip gloss and false eyelashes put together.
You'd make the American Motors Ambassador the only car line in America with both air-conditioning and automatic transmission as standard equipment.

The American Motors Ambassador is purely and simply the only 1971 station wagon in the world with air-conditioning, automatic transmission and a V-8 engine as standard equipment.

The Ambassador is purely and simply the only 1971 station wagon in the world with air-conditioning, automatic transmission and a V-8 engine as standard equipment. And that's not all. The Ambassador's impressive list of standard equipment also includes a roof rack, a dual hinged tailgate and full wheel covers. And that's not all. You get something usually found on only the Most expensive cars: coil spring seats for couch-like comfort. Also, to carry your comfort close to the extreme, you ride on a 4-wheel coil spring suspension. And that should be enough for anybody. American Motors II

The new American Motors AMX will be sold as democratically as possible.

The new AMX will be sold as democratically as possible.
We, American Motors, have over 2,300 dealers across the country who can sell more AMX's than we can make. And we will only make about 10,000 this year. In other words, we're faced with a mini-Supply of AMX's and a maxi-Demand for AMX's. In an effort to give everyone an equal chance to buy an AMX, we're resorting to the best solution we can think of. Like the House of Representatives, we will try to send a fair share of AMX's to each state, based on its propor-tionate population. For example, California, with a larger share of the people, should receive a larger share of AMX's. New Hampshire, with fewer people, won't get quite so many. It should all work out democratically. What Is It! The AMX is a 2-seater. For people who love sports
cars, but haven't the time or the money to take care of one. Priced at under $3,300: the AMX offers most of the advantages of a high-priced foreign car. . With none of the disadvantages associated with owning a high performance sports car. The costly disadvantages of constant maintenance and special engine tune-ups. In short, the AMX gives you the ease of maintenance associated with a family sedan, along with the sheer fun and maneuverability of a sports car costing thousands more.
The Engine. One Size Fits AIL The AMX body is made of steel.Which, while strong, is also heavy. So we tried an imaginative tethnique for reducing the AMX's total weight. We selected a lightweight engine block that combusts exactly the same power as a heavy block.

Why don't we enter high-performance American Motors Rambler V8s in racing? Because the only race the Rambler cares about is the human race!

Why don't we enter high-performance Rambler V-8s in racing? Because the only race the American Motors Rambler cares about is the human race!
Racing has a real fascination as professional driv-ers unleash raw horsepower and flaunt death. It's a thrilling sport—in the right place. Out of its proper place, racing is deadly. 'Yet there are those who are glamorizing and adver-tising race-track speeds in order to sell cars. This is not in the public interest, and Rambler will have no part in it. Glorification of horsepower tempts teen-agers to think high-speed driving is`in'—and safety 'out' —makes irresponsible drivers even more irrespon-sible, contributes to the mounting carnage on the nation's highways.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Rambler is strongly in favor of responsive horse-power and performance—offers engines up to 270 HP. But we are strongly against glamorizing raw horsepower and speed to the point where irresponsible drivers may be tempted to abuse them. We believe automobiles should have the best of both—a sensible and satisfying balance of performance and economy, as well as roomi-ness and handling ease. That's the way we build Ramblers.
While many people are still apathetic, growing numbers are joining Rambler's crusade against
the promotion of excessive speed and horsepower. Are Ramblers underpowered? Emphatically not! Every Rambler delivers spirited perform-ance. Our Ambassador, for instance, offers a 270-hp V-8. It would be no trick at all to beef up that rating to 300-hp or more. But it would serve you no better. Rambler's prime concern is for your safety, comfort, satisfaction, and savings. That's why every Rambler balances turnpike performance with sensible economy. It's why Rambler gives you Advanced Unit Con-struction, Double-Safety Brakes (separate sys-tems, front and rear); a Ceramic-Armored exhaust system that protects against rust and fume leaks. Plus optional headrests that act as headguards against whiplash if your car is struck from behind. Rambler spends millions on testing cars before they go on sale, millions more on safety advances. But not one cent to glorify speed. We welcome your comments, and invite you to join our crusade for safe motoring. American Motors Corporation, Detroit 32, Michigan.

We made the American Motors AMX look tougher this year because it's tougher this year.

We made the American Motors AMX look tougher this year because it's tougher this year.
The 1970 AMX comes with a new 360 cu. in. engine as standard equipment. It develops 290 horsepower, 65 more than we had last year. And this year we've added to our list of standard items. To go with our completely redesigned instrument panel, we offer contoured high-back bucket seats with integral head restraints. Mag style wheels. A new air scoop system in the front bumper to aid brake cooling. And the Corning safety windshield is also available. It's an American Motors exclusive. Of course, an all-synchromesh 4-on-the-floor with Hurst shifter is standard
for '70 just as it was for '69. So are dual exhausts, fiberglass belted wide profile tires, an energy ab-sorbing anti-theft steering column, heavy duty shocks and springs, rear torque links, a 140 m.p.h. speedometer, and a big tach. As for optional extras, a 390 cu. in. engine and a functional Ram-Air hood scoop top a long list. But rather than elaborate any fur-ther, we'll rest our case on the standard AMX. It's tough enough.

Test Drag a Javelin. Don't laugh. The American Motors Javelin SST is even faster than it looks.

Test Drag a Javelin. Don't laugh. The Javelin SST is even faster than it looks. When equipped with a .343 cube/280-BHP 4-barrel V-8, and a 4-speed manual transmission with a 3.54 rear axle, it will move from a standstill to 60 in about 7.86 sec-onds and pin your backbone to the bucket in the process. The engine pumps out a tough 365 lb.-ft. of torque at 3000 RPM. This SST in pure stock form will cover a standing quarter in 15.8. But performance just begins there. The real surprise comes in the Javelin's handling. The Javelin can be equipped with front disc brakes, and a special handling suspension that includes a larger dialneter sway. bar and heavy-duty springs- and shocks. • You'll notice the Javelin's phenomenal control in tight turns and highspeed cornering. Popular Science Monthly wrote that The Javelin reacts almost the same at high speed as it does during low speed maneuvers. Steering ratio was 18.1 to 1 overall and it felt just right for this can Not too slow, not too fast. I particularly liked the action of the power steering. Aside from handling, the ride is excellent — tight and firm, yet 'comfortable-enough for long-distance or everyday driving.

Introducing a sensible alternative to the money-squeezing, insurance-strangling muscle cars of America. The American Motors Hornet SC/360.

Introducing a sensible alternative to the money-squeezing, insurance-strangling muscle cars of America. The Hornet SC/360. The Hornet SC/360 lists for only $2,663. Which is surprising when you consider what the September issue of Motor Trend had to say about it: The SC/360 is just a plain gas to drive. It has lightning quick per-formance... It handles like a dream, especially on the TransAm road course at Michigan Interna-tional Speedway where we had an opportunity to test it. A 360 CID V-8 engine with 245 horse-power is standard. So is a 3-on-the-floor, all synchromesh transmission. A heavy-duty clutch. D70 x 14 PolyglasTM tires. 14 x 6 mag style wheels. Space saver spare: Rally stripe. And individual reclining seats. To make it even gutsier, the SC/360 also comes with a long list of options. Among which you'll find a 4-barrel 360 V-8 that develops 285 horsepower. An all synchro 4-on-the-floor with Hurst shifter.. Ram air induction with hood scoop. 3.54 or 3.91 rear axle with Twin-Grip. Dual ex-hausts. White letter tires. Heavy-duty suspension. And a big tach. But even with the added cost of these options, the SC/360 ends up with a lower list price than most of its bigger, muscle-bound competitors. And because of its standard 12.5: 1 weight-to-power ratio, insurance on the SC/360 ends up lower, too. As a leading car magazine has said, 'The day of the heavy 400-cube, 400-horsepower supercar may be just about over.' 'Manufacturer's suggested retail price. Federal taxes in-cluded. State and local taxes, if any, destination charges excluded. If you had to compete with GM, Ford and Chrysler what would you do? American Motors

Why is it when the other car companies come out with sporty little cars, the cars come out looking the same? If you had to compete with GM, Ford and Chrysler, what would you do? The American Motors Gremlin X.

Why is it when the other car companies come out with sporty little cars, the cars come out looking the same? There is an approach to the sporty little car that goes beyond the exagger-ated paint job. And the Gremlin X is the first little car to take it. It is,-basically and fundamentally, the first little car to break with the design traditions of Detroit. There is no traditional gentle sloping of the rear. There are none of the conventional curves around the front and sides. And there is no attempt to suggest more performance than there actually is. Instead of a fat black stripe down the hood, there are real fat tires. Fatter standard tires than the Vega GT, Pinto Rallye, Maverick Grabber, or Comet GT offer you. There are 4 of the new slot-style wheels and 2 bucket seats. The same bucket seats we put in our Javelin. And instead of non-functioning hood scoops, there is a standard 6 cylinder engine that develops 135 horsepower. More cylinders than Pinto and Vega. And more horsepower than all four. Even the Gremlin X's optional engine is a larger 6 cylinder than those offered by Comet or Grabber. It is 258 cubic inches and generates 150 horsepower. But no matter how sporty the Gremlin X gets, it is still the original American subcompact. With all the economy and maneuverability that implies. It gives you up to 25 miles to the gallon. And it is heavier, with wider front and rear tracks than any of the other four. Finally, the Gremlin X lists for only $2299. * Which is quite a bargain when you consider what you're getting for your money. Either a different-looking subcompact with the spirit of a sporty car. Or a different-looking sporty car with the advantages of a subcompact. If you had to compete with GM, Ford and Chrysler, what would you do? The American Motors Gremlin X.
