We made the American Motors AMX look tougher this year because it's tougher this year. 
The 1970 AMX comes with a new 360 cu. in. engine as standard equipment. It develops 290 horsepower, 65 more than we had last year. And this year we've added to our list of standard items. To go with our completely redesigned instrument panel, we offer contoured high-back bucket seats with integral head restraints. Mag style wheels. A new air scoop system in the front bumper to aid brake cooling. And the Corning safety windshield is also available. It's an American Motors exclusive. Of course, an all-synchromesh 4-on-the-floor with Hurst shifter is standard 
for '70 just as it was for '69. So are dual exhausts, fiberglass belted wide profile tires, an energy ab-sorbing anti-theft steering column, heavy duty shocks and springs, rear torque links, a 140 m.p.h. speedometer, and a big tach. As for optional extras, a 390 cu. in. engine and a functional Ram-Air hood scoop top a long list. But rather than elaborate any fur-ther, we'll rest our case on the standard AMX. It's tough enough.

Test Drag a Javelin. Don't laugh. The Javelin SST is even faster than it looks. When equipped with a .343 cube/280-BHP 4-barrel V-8, and a 4-speed manual transmission with a 3.54 rear axle, it will move from a standstill to 60 in about 7.86 sec-onds and pin your backbone to the bucket in the process. The engine pumps out a tough 365 lb.-ft. of torque at 3000 RPM. This SST in pure stock form will cover a standing quarter in 15.8. But performance just begins there. The real surprise comes in the Javelin's handling. The Javelin can be equipped with front disc brakes, and a special handling suspension that includes a larger dialneter sway. bar and heavy-duty springs- and shocks. • You'll notice the Javelin's phenomenal control in tight turns and highspeed cornering. Which is surprising when you consider what the September issue of Motor Trend had to say about it: The SC/360 is just a plain gas to drive. It has lightning quick per-formance... It handles like a dream, especially on the TransAm road course at Michigan Interna-tional Speedway where we had an opportunity to test it. A 360 CID V-8 engine with 245 horse-power is standard. And it is heavier, with wider front and rear tracks than any of the other four. Finally, the Gremlin X lists for only $2299. * Which is quite a bargain when you consider what you're getting for your money. Either a different-looking subcompact with the spirit of a sporty car.
